HABIT APPLIANCE

You have just had a habit appliance placed on your upper arch. This is a special “fence” to keep your thumb out of your mouth or to train your tongue to stay back in your mouth. We are using this appliance because your thumb or tongue habit has moved your front teeth in the wrong position. This appliance will help us correct the position of your upper and lower front teeth. Here are a few things you will want to know about your habit appliance:

  • · You will have to learn to talk, eat and swallow with your appliance. Do not be impatient. Some people get used to their appliance sooner than others. Don’t worry-you will get used to it.
  • · The appliance is in your mouth to keep you from sucking your thumb (or finger) or from thrusting your tongue forward when you swallow. You have had your habit your whole life. Now we have put something in to stop you from doing what you have been doing (whether you were aware of doing it or not). This is going to be the hardest thing you have ever done in your life. Be patient. We all know you can do it!
  • · You might notice that some of your upper teeth are a little sore for the next few days. This is normal. Take Tylenol, aspirin or Advil as needed.
  • · Your tongue may get sore as it rubs against the appliance. This should last only a few days. Be patient and your tongue will adapt.
  • · Because the habit appliance is breakable or can come loose, please do not eat hard, sticky foods. If the appliance comes loose, we will need to see you to re-cement it.
  • · Be sure to brush like we instructed you. The appliance has many places where food and plaque can get stuck.
  • We will be seeing you in a few weeks to see how you and the appliance are getting along. If you have any questions or problems before your next appointment, please call us at 368-8348.
